Tell us about your family and your accomplishments.
I was born in 1921, one of nine children. Married for 50 years and raised five children. I helped my husband (a farmer) provide for our family. I am a widower and attend the senior citizens center in Baxley where I enjoy playing checkers, going on field trips, and talking long walks. My physician said that the senior center has made an extreme difference in my life - doing better physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Do you visit a senior center?
Appling County Senior Center - Concerted Services.
How long have you been attending the center? What made you start going to the center?
Five years. I lost two children within five months of each other, my family signed me up and made me go. Today I know and my doctor agrees it saved my life.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy at the center
Checkers, field trips, bingo, walking, and fishing.
How has the center helped you Age Well and Live Well?
It has kept my mind and body active. I have a reason to get up in the morning because I have somewhere to go.
Do you volunteer at your senior center or at other community organizations?
Yes. I help in the flower garden.
What advice would you give to young people today on how to live a good long life?
Don't drink, smoke, and always be positive. Think of your glass as half full not half empty.
