Tell us about your family & your accomplishments:
- I was born in Gordon County at a place called Dews Pond. I had 1 brother and 1 sister. My brother was a Baptist preacher.
- I was married to my wife for 50 years. We had 4 children—2 girls and 2 boys. My oldest son died. My children live in the Dalton-Calhoun area. I have 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
- I was in the Army for 1942 – 1946 during WW II and was stationed for some time in Wyoming.
- I grew up on a farm and continued living on the farm while I worked in Marietta at Lockheed Aircraft for 30 years. Before I retired, I was an assembler, lead man, and inspector.
- I love writing poetry, but it’s hard now for me to see. I bring to the Center poems I have written on poster board with pictures taped to the back. I have some poems in books at home. I also like to paint and have a lot of paintings at home.
Do you visit a senior center? Daily. If yes, which one: Calhoun in Gordon County
How long have you been attending the center? 6 years. What made you start going to the center? To socialize after my wife died.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy at the center?
The music and dancing especially. Also shooting pool and playing rook. A former Site Manager commented, “I would say Mr. Darrell is today’s Grand”pa” Moses. His poetry has been published in the Gordon Times.”
How has the center helped you Age Well and Live Well?
Kept the loneliness away and helped keep me “well contented.”
Do you volunteer at your senior center or at other community organizations?
I go with Dixie Landress to a nursing home every week where she plays the piano and a group sings.
What advice would you give to young people today on how to live a good long life?
Never smoke and drink alcohol beverages. Be careful about driving vehicles. Eat and drink nutritious food.
